Leyland Market refurbishment
Leyland Market refurbishment
Leyland Market has relocated to relocate to Kings Court to allow for the refurbishment of the existing building.
It is expected that the works will be complete by late 2025.
What will be happening?
The market in the existing location will close at the end of the day on Tuesday 24 September, then will re-open in Kings Court on Friday 27 September.
During the temporary move, the interior of the existing market building will be refurbished to update the branding and signage for the stalls and central stalls will be upgraded.
The market will also be expanded, creating new external stalls to wrap the market building and have a direct relationship to a new market square.
Finally, the existing market hall structure will be refurbished while retaining the internal historic building structure (formerly a Leyland Motors building), and the long-term problematic roof will be replaced with a new sustainable structure.
Where will the market be relocated?
Leyland Market will move to Kings Court in Leyland from Friday 27 September for 12-months while the existing building undergoes an exciting new refurbishment.
The temporary location, Kings Court is less than a five-minute walk from the existing market with excellent access to all the businesses on Hough Lane and the wider Town Centre.
There will be no change to opening hours, with the market open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday each week.
The council has worked on Kings Court to make sure it can be an accessible, modern and suitable market building for the duration of the works.
What was the decision-making process for the relocation?
The council and market traders have worked together to great lengths to navigate the temporary relocation of the market.
The aim from the start was to ensure that the local businesses were not negatively affected by the proposed works and traders were offered a relocation package, in which the council would support with the move and freeze rent for the period of the relocation.
If anyone chose not to relocate, a statutory measure compensation package was offered.
This will ensure that our community does not lose its wonderful market and that those who wished to continue trading were able to do so.
Not all traders opted to relocate.
When will the work be complete?
We expect the market refurbishment to be complete with traders in the new space by late 2025.
